The Intertextual Relationships between Revelation 18:20 and Psalm 96[95]:11: An Overlooked Allusion (II)
This study explores the intertextual relationship between Revelation 18:20 and Psalm 96:11, addressing a gap in biblical scholarship. While some scholars have proposed a connection between the two texts, the identification of Psalm 96:11 as an allusion to Revelation 18:20 remains underexplored. The aim of this study is to establish Psalm 96:11 as a meaningful allusion to Revelation 18:20, employing four criteria: (1) textual availability— confirming John’s familiarity with the Psalms, particularly Psalm 96; (2) verbal parallels— identifying linguistic similarities; (3) thematic correspondence—examining shared themes of eschatological joy and divine judgment in both passages; (4) structural parallels— observing the structural relationship, where Revelation 18:20 mirrors the division of Psalm 96 between exhortations to worship and reasons for worship. By applying these four criteria, this study concludes that Psalm 96:11 constitutes a significant allusion to Revelation 18:20. This intertextual connection deepens the interpretation of Revelation 18:20, framing it as a hymn of praise celebrating God’s judgment on Babylon, aligning with the themes of divine sovereignty and the fulfillment of judgment as foretold in the Psalms.
